BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Old Dominion men’s tennis team is set to compete in the ITA Men’s Tennis Atlantic Regional Championships this weekend at Virginia Tech’s Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. The event serves as a qualifier for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, which begin Thursday, Nov. 12 in Flushing, N.Y.

Virginia Tech is hosting players from 24 teams from around the region including Bucknell, Delaware, Duquesne, Georgetown, George Washington, George Mason, Hampton, James Madison, Liberty, Morgan State, Mount St. Mary’s, Navy, Norfolk State, Old Dominion, Penn State, Radford, Richmond, Saint Joseph’s, Temple, UMBC, VCU, Villanova, Virginia and William & Mary.

This is the Tennis Monarchs first action of the month, as the team has not competed since the St. Joseph’s Invite due to the cancellation of the Elon Invite in the wake of Hurricane Joaquin.

Last time on the courts, Adam Moundir claimed third place in the Blue Draw of the Duke James Bonk Invitational. Freshman Aziz Kijametovic also shined for Aljosa Piric’s Tennis Monarchs, as he got off to a 2-1 start in singles action. In the Consolation Finals, Kijametovic made quick work out of Louisville’s Santiago Salazar (6-2, 6-0).

At the Princeton Ivy Plus, after dropping his first match of the weekend, ODU’s Zvonimir Podvinski reeled off two consecutive wins to land himself a spot in the Consolation Finals against Yale’s Martin Svenning, where Podvinski prevailed after dropping the first set (5-7, 6-4, 10-3).

The Monarchs will begin tennis action on Friday at 8:30 a.m. in Blacksburg with the doubles “play-in” round of 128, followed by the round of 64. For a complete look at the tournament’s schedule, please see below.
