NORFOLK, Va. – The 11th-ranked Old Dominion field hockey team suffered a 1-0 defeat to the No. 7 Maryland Terrapins Wednesday night at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex. The loss marked the first time the Lady Monarchs have been held scoreless this season, as ODU fell to 8-4 on the season and the Terrapins improved to 12-3.

Both teams played solid defense throughout the first half, with Maryland recording the only shot in the final 25 minutes. The Lady Monarchs failed to register a shot-on-goal in the opening half, which is the first time this year ODU’s offense has not recorded a shot in a half. Maryland tallied five shots and three penalty corners, but still could not find the back of the cage.

The Terrapins were the ones to light up the scoreboard, scoring with 15:43 left in the game, when Anna Dessoye scored unassisted off a penalty corner. She lifted the ball over the goalkeeper, Kealsie Robles, who made a strong move to block the initial corner shot.

The Lady Monarchs notched their first shot of the game with 10 minutes left to play after picking up their offense attack and pressuring the Terrapins back line. ODU then pulled their goal keeper with 5:19 to go, using an extra attacker in hopes of netting the equalizer.

Old Dominion recorded four corners and four shots on goal in the final minutes, but were unable to find the back of the cage. Sarah Breen registered two shots, while Teisha King and Chrissy Horn tallied one a piece.

Maryland outshot the Monarchs 11-4 for the game, while holding a slight edge in corners 5-4.

The Lady Monarchs will travel to Storrs, to take on the No. 2 ranked Connecticut Huskies, Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
