NORFOLK, Va. –The Old Dominion women’s soccer team dropped a tough 2-0 defeat to North Texas on Sunday at the ODU Soccer Complex.
North Texas (12-2-1, 4-0-1 C-USA) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, as the Mean Green’s Karla Pineda scored on a penalty kick in the second minute.
However, following the early score by the Mean Green, ODU (4-9-0, 2-2-0 C-USA) had the better of the play in the opening half. The Lady Monarchs outshot North Texas, 6-3, but the Mean Green would carry the one-goal lead into the break.
The Lady Monarchs continued to push numbers forward in the second half, but could not find the back of the net. Freshman Iris Achterhof had one of ODU's best oppportunities late in the second half, when her shot from just outside the box skipped off the crossbar.
North Texas then added an insurance goal in the 75th minute when Marchelle Davis hit a shot into the upper right corner of the net that sailed just over the fingertips of ODU goalkeeper Erin Kinz.
Overall, ODU outshot the Mean Green, 12-9, and held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman Achterhof led ODU in shots with five, while Madison Hogan added three shots. In net, Kinz recorded three saves for the Lady Monarchs.
ODU returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 13 for a matchup with UAB at 7 p.m. at the ODU Soccer Complex.
