Dolan Scores Golden Goal as No. 15 ODU Upsets No. 5 UVA

NORFOLK, Va. – After the first overtime period ended with no golden goal, junior Casey Dolan connected on a corner during double-overtime to lift the 15th-ranked Lady Monarchs to a 3-2 win over No. 5 Virginia. Old Dominion moved to 8-3 on the season, taking down its fifth ranked opponent of the season. The Virginia Cavaliers fell to 10-3 overall.

Along with Dolan, senior Teisha King and freshman Bailey Quinn notched a goal for the Lady Monarchs, while senior Sarah Breen and junior Megan Byas each tallied an assist.

UVA’s defense did not allow the Lady Monarchs to take a shot in the first 20 minutes of the game, but when ODU finally got a shot off, it lit up the scoreboard. Quinn placed the ball perfectly into the right side of the cage off an assist by Breen to give ODU the 1-0 lead with 14:09 left to play in the first half. The goal was not only off the first shot of the game, but off of Quinn’s first shot of the season.

The Cavaliers got off six shots in the first half, but were not able to capitalize, as the Lady Monarchs held the 1-0 lead at the intermission.

In the opening three minutes of the second half, King scored her third goal of the weekend after she corralled Byas’ saved corner shot and put the ball into the left side of the cage. With the goal, ODU led UVA 2-0 with 31:48 left in the game.

Virginia mounted a counter attack and scored two goals in a span of 2:33 to tie the game with 12 minutes left in regulation. Riley Tata scored first for UVA off an assist by Tara Vittese, while Vittese notched the second goal for the Cavaliers. Neither team would score in the final minutes, as the game headed into overtime.

The Lady Monarchs dominated the overtime periods, recording eight shots to UVA’s 2. ODU was also awarded four penalty corners, with the last one proving to set up the game winner by Dolan.

For the game, ODU held a slight 17-16 edge in shots and an 11-7 advantage in penalty corners.

Freshman Kealsie Robles played an outstanding game in goal for ODU, finishing the day with seven saves in 91:21 of action. Junior Catalina Barahona gave Robles a little help on the defensive end, as she recorded two defensive saves.

Rebecca Holden played the first half in goal for UVA, while Carrera Lucas played the final period and overtime. Lucas suffered the loss and made eight saves on the day.

The Lady Monarchs will look to take down their sixth ranked opponent of the season when they host No. 8 Maryland on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 5:00 p.m.
