NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion men’s soccer team is set to host the 40th annual STIHL Classic this weekend. The Monarchs will take on Jacksonville on Friday, Sept. 11, and Hartford on Sunday, Sept. 13. Both matches are slated for 7 p.m. kickoffs.
Live stats and video will be available for fans that cannot make it out to the ODU Soccer Complex.
This year’s field consists of No. 22 ODU, VCU, Jacksonville and Hartford. The tournament setup will have ODU hosting two games and VCU hosting two games. The Rams will host Hartford on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and Jacksonville on Sunday night at 7 p.m.
No. 22 ODU (2-1-0) enters the weekend as the only ranked team in the field. The Monarchs are coming off of a 1-0-0 weekend in which they defeated Loyola University Maryland, 3-0, on the road.
Senior forward Josue Henriquez has paced the Monarch attack this season, with a team-leading four goals, which is tied for fifth in the NCAA. Freshmen Niko Klosterhalfen and Johan De Picker are tied for second on the team in scoring with three points, tallying a goal and a goal assist apiece.
Jacksonville (2-0-1) has yet to lose this season, earning wins over Georgia State and Detroit and drawing FAU. Junior midfielder Martin Agredo leads the Dolphins with two goals.
Hartford (1-0-2) also enters the STIHL Classic undefeated, earning a win over Monmouth and tying both Holy Cross and Siena. Javoni Simms and Brian Richards are tied for the team lead in scoring with two goals apiece.
VCU (0-4-0) is winless entering the weekend but have played a difficult schedule. All four losses have come to teams that were either ranked or receiving votes in the NSCAA Top 25. Junior Jason McGlothern has scored two of the Rams’ three goals on the season.
Friday’s match against Jacksonville will be featured as a ‘Game of the Week’ and the live stream will include play-by-play from Ted Alexander and color commentary from Gregg Mottinger.
The Student Spirit Contest will also take place on Friday, as students will have the opportunity to win up to $500 for their team, residence hall or organization.
