NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion sailing team competed in three events this weekend, as some members sailed at the Faye Bennet/MAISA Women’s Singles in Annapolis, Md. or the MAISA Laser Eliminator in Kings Point, N.Y., while the rest participated in the St. Mary’s Fall Interconference in St. Mary’s, Md.
At the Faye Bennet Championship Regatta, ODU registered a 12th place finish among the 18-team field. Freshman Olivia Windemuller placed in the top 10 in five separate singlehanded races for the Monarchs.
At the MAISA Laser Eliminator, three separate Monarchs placed within the top 10 out of the 19 singlehanded boats. Ethan Lounsbury finished fifth, Joe David took sixth and Alec Chicoine registered a ninth place finish. By placing in the top six at this event, Lounsbury and David qualified for the Van Dyne Trophy to be held at Kings Point on Saturday, Oct. 10.
In the last of the three weekend events, ODU sailed its way to a second place finish at the St. Mary’s Fall Interconference Regatta, placing behind only Georgetown. Esteban Forrer and Gabriel Smith recorded a second place finish in Division A after taking first in four separate races. In Division B, Augie Dale, Kaylie Gallagher and Cady Johnson placed third after securing nine top-five finishes.
The ODU sailing team resumes action for the fall slate Saturday, Oct. 3 at the Danmark Trophy in New London, Conn. and at the South Fall Qualifier/First War Qualifier in Hampton, Va.
