HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Old Dominion women’s soccer team (4-7-0, 2-0-0) is still undefeated in conference play after getting the better of host Southern Miss (2-5-3, 0-2-0) on a rainy Sunday afternoon by a score of 1-0. ODU has now won three of its last four matches.
The result lifts ODU to its best start in conference play for since 2011 (2-0-1 in the CAA) and first time the Lady Soccer Monarchs have started 2-0 since 2005. Today's win also marks the first time since 2010 that Old Dominion women’s soccer has won two road games in a row (4-1 win at VMI; 2-1 [OT] win at Radford).
"This was a great team effort in tough conditions today," said ODU head coach Angie Hind. "We had to adapt to the conditions and showed great desire to get the win. Two wins on the road to start conference play is an awesome boost to take home with us."
After Old Dominion took down a 7-3-0 LA Tech team in Ruston, La. in overtime (2-1) on Friday, Hind’s Lady Monarchs followed that performance up with another Conference USA victory (2-0-0) on the road in Hattiesburg, Miss. ODU will now play host to five consecutive C-USA contests.
With the score knotted 0-0 at halftime, Old Dominion controlled the stats, as ODU dominated the shot count, 9-3; as well as the corner kick tally, 4-1. USM’s Brittany Taylor came up with four first half saves to keep the Lady Soccer Monarchs scoreless in the first 45 minutes of action. ODU Freshman Iris Achterhof fired off a first half high three shots.
In the 57th minute, it was freshman Achterhof who slipped a through ball past the USM defense, which found teammate Madison Hogan who booted the ball into the back of the Golden Eagles’ net, giving Old Dominion a 1-0 advantage. The goal was Hogan’s third of the year and second in as many contests. The assist was Achterhof’s first of her young collegiate career.
After 90 minutes of play, Erink Kinz (GK) and the Old Dominion defense didn’t allow goal, lifting the Lady Soccer Monarchs to its second consecutive conference road win (1-0) over Southern Miss. in Hattiesburg on Sunday afternoon.
Kinz would make three second half saves to preserve a clean sheet, while USM’s Taylor compiled nine saves in the loss. For the match, Old Dominion outshot Southern Miss, 16-10, with 10 of ODU’s shots being on goal compared to the Golden Eagles’ three. The Lady Soccer Monarchs attempted nine corners, as USM took three.
Kathryn Hill, Achterhof and Hogan fired off a game-high three shots, each, respectively.
