RUSTON, La. – Louisiana Tech had its seven-game home winning streak come to end in a heartbreaking way, as ODU’s Grace Haverly’s first half goal and Madison Hogan’s thrilling overtime game-winner lifted the Old Dominion women’s soccer team (3-7-0, 1-0-0) over LA Tech (7-4-0, 0-1-0) by a 2-1 score on Friday night at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex.

"This is an important start for us in conference play. I thought we battled really well tonight and showed great character to take the win in overtime," said ODU head coach Angie Hind.

Both teams scored on their first shot attempts, which started just 82 seconds into the match off a cross into the box from Melanie Oakes, where Grace Haverly flicked a header into the right corner, giving Old Dominion an early 1-0 advantage. The goal was Haverly’s first of the season, while Oakes racked up her second assist of the year.

Less than a minute later (2:10) LA Tech’s Anne Armstrong found teammate Kathryn Sloan, who knotted the score back to even 1-1, which would be the score heading into halftime.

In the first 45 minutes, Old Dominion led the shot count 4-3, while the Lady Techsters led the first half corner tally, 2-1.

In the 60th minute, the head referee awarded the Lady Techsters a penalty kick. Having never missed a PK, LA Tech’s senior Brittany Beddow was denied by Old Dominion’s Erin Kinz, which was the potential game-winner as Kinz guessed correctly and came up with the save and ultimately led to an overtime session with the score tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes of action.

In the 98th minute, a high ball sent into the box by ODU junior Kathryn Hill found the foot of Madison Hogan who got enough of it to sneak it past LA Tech’s goalkeeper Kylee Seto to lift the Lady Soccer Monarchs to a perfect 1-0 start in C-USA play on Friday night in Ruston. The goal was Hogan’s second of the year and the dish was Hill’s second of the season.

In all, ODU’s Kinz collected seven saves on the night. The Techsters held a 13-12 shot advantage and a 4-3 edge on corner kicks, while Seto registered seven saves in the loss.
