ODU Sailing Takes Fourth at Nevins Trophy

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The Old Dominion sailing team placed fourth out of 20 teams at the Nevins Trophy Regatta in Kings Point, New York over the weekend, settling in behind only Georgetown, Navy and St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

Leading the way for the Monarchs were two-time All-American Esteban Forrer and All-American crew Gabriel Smith, who clinched a first place finish in Division A. The duo outscored the second-place boat from Georgetown by 20 points. Forrer and Smith took first place in the fourth, sixth, and 16th race of the event.

In Division B, ODU’s Augie Dale, Kaylie Gallagher and Dane Pedersen notched a fifth place finish. The trio won the 10th race of the event and also recorded three runner-up finishes.

Finally, in Division C of the Nevins Trophy, the Monarchs’ Ethan Lounsbury recorded a ninth place finish in the individual 420 boat races.

The ODU sailing team will look to build off its promising start on Saturday, Sept. 26 when some Monarch sailors compete at the Faye Bennett/MAISA Women’s Singles or the MAISA Laser Eliminator held in Annapolis, Maryland, while others will participate at the St. Mary’s Fall Regatta in St. Mary’s, Maryland.
