Greenville, N.C. – Despite outshooting East Carolina 11-6 and holding a 10-2 advantage in corners, Old Dominion (2-7-0) fell to the hosting Pirates (5-4-1) by 1-0 score on Sunday afternoon at Johnson Stadium.
"We are very disappointed to lose this game as it was one we dominated for most of the 90 minutes, but simply could not capitalize," explained ODU head coach Angie Hind.
The Lady Soccer Monarchs entered Sunday’s contest after taking down George Mason on Friday night, 3-1, in which ODU freshman Iris Achterhof completed a hat trick, as all three of her goals came in the second half.
On Sunday in the first 45 minutes of scoreless action, Old Dominion fired four shots compared to ECU’s three, while also taking four corners compared to the Pirates one.
Just under 14 minutes into the second half (58:56), East Carolina capitalized on an attempted ODU clear, in which Lana Spitler ultimately collected the ball before drilling her shot into the left corner of the Lady Monarch net to give ECU a 1-0 advantage. The goal was Spitler’s fifth of the 2015 season.
Old Dominion would take seven second half shots, as East Carolina took three. The Lady Soccer Monarchs were unable to convert on six second half corner kick attempts, while ECU attempted just one corner in the final 45 minutes of play; however, it was the Pirates who came out on top 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in Greenville.
Grace Haverly, Iris Achterhof, Jordan Jones and Sinead Tierney paced the Lady Monarchs with two shots each.
ODU’s Erin Kinz made one save in her 90 minutes of work in goal. Saundra Baron was credited with five saves in the winning effort.
