NORFOLK, Va. – The 16th-ranked Old Dominion field hockey team continues its non-conference slate with two road games at Michigan State University this weekend. The Lady Monarchs will take on No. 19 Michigan State on Friday at 2:00 p.m. and then compete against Kent State on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
ODU enters the weekend with a 1-1 overall record after defeating No. 7 Penn State and falling to American last weekend. Senior midfielder Sarah Breen paced the offense with two goals, while junior Catalina Barahona and freshman Chrissy Horn each tallied two assists. Sophomore Kelly Weaver played the majority of time in goal for the Monarchs, earning her first career start against Penn State. She recorded 10 saves and posted a 2.14 goals-against average over the weekend.
Breen not only leads the team in goals and points this season, but also leads all current players in both career marks. She has notched 36 goals and totaled 85 points during her time with the Lady Monarchs. The All-American averages 27 points per year, which will put her above 100 points for her career following the 2015 season.
The Spartans enter the match up with 1-1 record as well after dropping a 3-1 loss to Delaware in their season opener, but following with a 5-1 victory over Central Michigan the next day. Claire Johnson paces the MSU offense with two goals, while Mallory Tyler has notched one goal and dished out an assist in the first two games. Sierra Patton has played all 140 minutes in goal for Michigan State and has posted eight saves and a 2.00 goals-against average.
Kent State is 1-0 to start the season after a thrilling 4-3 double-overtime victory over VCU last Saturday. Four different players scored for the Golden Flashes, while Ines Delpech and Susanne Felder assisted two of the four goals. After one game, Alison Harmatz, Jamie Fries, Krysti Lober and Madison Thompson are all tied with two points to lead the team. Andrea Rinehart got the nod in the season opener and played all 86:05 in goal for the Golden Flashes. She finished the game with eight saves and a .727 save percentage.
