NORFOLK, Va. – For the first time since Aug. 27, the Old Dominion women’s soccer team (2-6-0) played in front of their home crowd at the ODU Soccer Complex, where they defeated George Mason (4-4-0) by a score of 3-1 on Friday night. Lady Monarch freshman Iris Achterhof netted all three ODU goals in the second half, bringing her score count to six for the season.

Despite five George Mason and two Old Dominion first half shots (both fired by Achterhof), the score remained 0-0 heading into the locker rooms at halftime. The Patriots attempted the only two corner kicks in the first 45 minutes of action.

Lady Monarch goal keeper Erin Kinz came up three saves in the first half, while Mason’s Kirsten Glad made two.

In the 53rd minute, Old Dominion’s Kira Laurento played a through ball into Achterhof, in which the right-footed true freshman chipped the ball over the sliding Mason GK to give ODU a 1-0 lead.

Less than four minutes later, Old Dominion’s Laurento crossed the ball from the right side of the field and found classmate Achterhof, who drilled her fifth goal of the season into the back of the GMU net, giving Angie Hind’s Lady Monarchs to a 2-0 advantage.

In the 79th minute, George Mason cut its deficit in half (1-2), when Emma Star scored from about 25 yards out off an Alex Meyers pass. The goal was Starr’s second of the season.

In the 86th, ODU’s Achterhof completed her first career hat trick on a shot from just inside the 18, in which the ball found the upper ninety of the right side of the net. Devyn Hannis was credited with the assist to give Old Dominion the 3-1 lead and victory on Friday night.

For the match, Mason led the shot count (11-8) as well as the corner kick tally (5-1). ODU Kinz finished the contest with three saves in goal for the Lady Soccer Monarchs, while George Mason’s Kirsten Glad also finished with three saves.
