ODU Sailing Opens Up Fall Competition Schedule

NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion sailing team opened up its fall slate this weekend in three separate events; some Monarchs took part in the Navy Laser South or the Navy Radial Women’s Open in Annnapolis, Maryland, and some sailors competed in the Riley Cup on the campus of ODU.

At the Navy Women’s Radial Open, freshman Olivia Windemuller placed 10th out of 18 in the singlehanded radial boats for the weekend’s events. Windemuller notched a third place finish in the 11th race of the event.

Three ODU sailors also competed at the Navy Laser South. ODU’s Ethan Lounsbury came in 9th out of 20 contestants and had four consecutive top-five finishes. The Monarchs’ Alec Chicoine followed right behind in 10th place with two top-five finishes to his credit.

Several Monarch sailors also competed in the Riley Cup on Saturday and Sunday at the ODU Sailing Center. In Division A, Jeremy Herrin and Carter Little placed fifth out of 17 FJ boats for the Monarchs, while Lee Dumaliang and Dane Pedersen followed behind with a sixth place finish. In the Division B race, Gabriel Smith and Stephen Guglielmo raced to a third place finish for ODU while Brendon Wilkins, Jack Elkin and Molly Sternberg combined for a seventh place finish. Overall, the two Monarch teams finished fourth and sixth out of the 17-team field.

The ODU sailing team will be back in action this Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Nevins Trophy in Kings Point, New York.
