LYNCHBURG, Va. – The ODU women’s soccer team (1-2-0) will begin a stretch of four away games Thursday afternoon when they head to Lynchburg, Va. to take on Liberty (0-2-1) at 3:00 p.m. The Lady Monarchs will be looking to claim their first road victory of the season to get the momentum rolling for looming away games against No. 11 Auburn, William & Mary (RV) and No. 1 Virginia within the next two weeks.

ODU enters Thursday’s contest after falling to UNCW 2-1 at the ODU Soccer Complex last Thursday night. UNCW pulled ahead early with two goals in the first 25 minutes of action, and despite a second half rally that included a goal in the 75th minute by ODU’s Iris Achterhof, the Seahawks escaped with the 2-1 victory.

Offensively, the Lady Monarchs are led by the freshman Achterhof, who has already netted three goals in the young season. Madison Hogan has one goal on the season and two assists to her credit, while another freshman, Kira Laurento, and junior transfer Kathryn Hill have each scored one goal apiece.

On the defensive side, junior goalkeeper Erin Kinz has played all 90 minutes of every game thus far for ODU, compiling a clean sheet in the win over Canisius and recording 11 saves on the year.

The Liberty Lady Flames take the pitch Thursday after playing to a scoreless draw against Tennessee last week. Before that, Liberty dropped back-to-back games against Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside in their opening weekend of action in California.

Liberty’s lone goal on the season was scored by senior midfielder Brittany Aanderud against UC Riverside at the Fullerton Tournament. Aanderud, who ironically hails from Fullerton, Calif., was a 2014 First-Team All-Big South selection and was named to the VaSID All-State First Team. She was also honored as an NSCAA All-Region Second-Team selection.

The Lady Flames are coached by Jessica Hain in her sixth season. She led her 2013 squad to a conference title and compiled a 16-6-1 record that season. A season ago, Hain’s Lady Flames churned out a 14-4-2 record while going 8-1-1 in conference play.
