NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion women’s soccer team had their comeback bid fall short on Thursday night in its 2-1 loss against UNCW at the ODU Soccer Complex in front of a crowd of 501. ODU true freshman Iris Achterhof put away her third goal of the season on Thursday in the 74th minute.
In the 6th minute of play, Wilmington’s Moa Jarl played a ball in from the right side of the field to the far post, where teammate Kennedy Ulrich one-timed a shot into the back of the ODU net, giving the Seahawks an early 1-0 advantage.
UNCW followed up with another goal in the 25th minute, when Stephanie Brown cleaned up a misfired Old Dominion clear, stretching the Seahawks lead to 2-0 heading into the locker rooms at halftime.
At the half, the Lady Soccer Monarchs led the shot count 7-5, as well as the corner tally, 2-1. UNCW’s Carolyn Huddy totaled three first half saves, while Erin Kinz made one save in the first 45 minutes.
In the 74th minute of play, ODU’s Madison Hogan dribbled along the right side of the field before firing the ball to the middle of the box, which found freshman Iris Achterhof, who one-timed a shot into the back of the net from just a few yards out. Achterhof has now scored three goals in the past two games, averaging a goal a game so far for her freshman campaign. The goal brought the score to 2-1 in favor of UNCW with 16 minutes remaining in regulation.
Despite a couple ODU opportunities down the stretch, UNCW was able to hold off the Lady Monarchs for the Seahawks first win of the season.
For the game, the shot count was tied at 11 and corners were also tied at 2 apiece, respectively. Huddy compiled all three of her saves for the game in the first 45 minutes of action, while Kinz made three second half saves, giving her four for the match.
