NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University women’s soccer team (1-1-0) took down Canisius (1-1-0) by a 3-0 score on Sunday afternoon at the ODU Soccer Complex. ODU’s Iris Achterhof recorded her first two goals of her young collegiate career, while Madison Hogan scored the third goal for the Lady Monarchs.
In the 30th minute of play, after making a nice run along the left side of the field, freshman Kira Laurento found fellow freshman teammate Iris Achterhof, who lobbed the ball over a diving Canisius goalkeeper to give ODU a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Soccer Monarchs would carry the 1-0 advantage with them into the locker rooms after the first 45 minutes of action. At halftime, Old Dominion led the shot count 9-3, while Canisius held a 2-1 advantage for corner kicks.
ODU’s Erin Kinz made three saves in the first half while not allowing a goal; Canisius goalkeeper Kailee Defranks compiled five first half saves.
In the 72nd minute of play, ODU’s Iris Achterhof fired a high arching shot from about 25 yards out which carried well above the Canisius’ GK’s hands and into the back of the net, giving Old Dominion a 2-0 lead with 18 minutes remaining in the match. The goal was Acherhof’s second of the game and of her career.
In the 83rd minute, Old Dominion made it a 3-0 advantage after Kathryn Hill’s corner kick found Grace Haverly, who headed it over to Madison Hogan in which Hogan slammed a header into Canisius’ net, lifting the Lady Soccer Monarchs over the Golden Griffins by a 3-0 score on Sunday afternoon.
For the game, Old Dominion dominated the shot count 22-5, while also holding a 4-2 advantage on corner kicks. Erin Kinz made four saves while compiling a clean sheet in goal for the Lady Soccer Monarchs, while Kailee Defranks tallied nine saves in 90 minutes of work.
