NORFOLK, Va. – ODU Baseball Monarch P.J. Higgins became the third Old Dominion player to sign a professional contract this summer, inking a deal with the Chicago Cubs.

Higgins, a Wallingford, Conn. native, was drafted by the Cubs in the 12th round of last month’s MLB Player Draft. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound third baseman was one of two players to start all 56 games this season as he helped the Monarchs advance to the Conference USA tournament for the second straight year. He batted .335 in his junior season and recorded a team-high 80 hits and 19 doubles. He also had three home runs, 32 RBI and scored 40 runs.

He joins former teammates Taylor Ostrich (Kansas City Royals) and Greg Tomchick (St. Louis Cardinals) in signing professional deals.
