Lopez Villa, Moundir and Weindl Garner VaSID All-State Recognition

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Fresh off winning the national championship, Virginia swept the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Men's Tennis All-State major awards. All-American Ryan Shane was named the VaSID State Player of the Year, while teammate Collin Altamirano garnered State Rookie of the Year honors. Cavaliers’ head coach Brian Boland was also selected as the State Coach of the Year. Old Dominion’s Carlos Lopez Villa was named to the All-State Second Team for singles, while Adam Moundir and Michael Weindl earned Second Team All-State accolades in doubles.

Shane received State Player of the Year honors after adding the NCAA Singles Championship to his team’s national championship in 2015. An All-American in both singles and doubles, he finished the year ranked among the top five in both singles and doubles, picking up 36 singles win in the process. Shane won both the ITA Atlantic Regional Singles and Doubles Championships, was a First Team All-ACC choice and a semifinalist at the ITA National Indoor Championship.

Boland, who led UVa to its second NCAA crown in the last three seasons, was named the State Coach of the Year for the sixth time. The Cavaliers finished 2015 at 29-3. The program won its ninth straight ACC Tournament crown to go along with its 12th consecutive league regular season title.

Altamirano, who was a First Team All-State pick in singles, is the third Cavalier to earn State Rookie of the Year honors. He compiled a 20-3 record and finished the year ranked No. 50 nationally in singles. Altamirano was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team, the All-ACC Third Team and received the ITA Atlantic Region Rookie of the Year honor in 2015.

Moundir and Weindl made Second Team All C-USA for doubles. The two true freshmen teamed up to make an outstanding No. 1 doubles team for Old Dominion, as they went 13-6 on the season. The duo didn’t allow more than four games in any of their 13 wins, including their 8-4 doubles win over No. 72 ranked Daniel Leitner/Gerhard Gruindelingh, which led to ODU defeating No. 66 South Alabama via a 4-3 score. ODU’s No. 1 doubles team went 5-2 against Conference USA competition this season. At one point this year, Moundir and Weindl got on a five match winning streak and claimed victory in 10 of 12 matches.

Lopez Villa, the lone senior and captain for ODU, started the season out on a 12-match winning streak and finished the season 15-3. He was named to the All-Conference USA First Team Singles in April after compiling an 53-5 record the past three seasons. Twelve of Carlos’ 15 wins this season came in straight sets, while taking down multiple nationally ranked opponents. At one point this season, Lopez Villa was ranked as high as No. 43, which is when he downed No. 42 Tomas Stillman of UTSA in straight sets. The Madrid, Spain-native raked in three Conference USA Player of the Week awards.
