NORTHERN IRELAND – Old Dominion University women’s golf had two individuals play in the prestigious Ladies British Open Amateur Championship at Portstewart Golf Club over the weekend.
ODU sophomore Katerina Vlasinova finished fifth after two rounds of stroke play while incoming freshman Charlotte DeCorte advanced to the semifinals of match play.
In the second round of stroke play, Vlasinova shot the low round of the day with 5-under par 68 (par 73), which included seven birdies. Vlasinova was 3-under par total (75-68) for the first two days of stroke play. She fell to Frida Kinhult of Sweden in the first round of match play.
A native of Belgium, DeCorte shot 76-73 and was seeded No. 42 after the qualifying rounds. DeCorte defeated Natalia Escuriola of Spain 2&1 in the first round before beating Slovenia’s Nastja Banovec 1 up in the second round. In the third round, she beat Elizabeth Tong of Canada, 2&1 to move into the quarterfinals where she defeated Paula Grant of Ireland, 3&2. DeCorte’s amazing run came to an end falling 3&2 to Celine Boutier from France, who was the eventual champion.
This was the 112th Ladies British Open Amateur Championship and the format is two rounds of stroke play followed by match play. In all, 140 of the world’s top amateur ladies compete and 64 qualify to advance to match play.
