Ostrich & Tomchick Join Higgins In MLB Draft

NORFOLK, VA—Two Old Dominion University seniors,  first baseman Taylor Ostrich (Carroll, IA) and righthanded pitcher Greg Tomchick (Virginia Beach, VA.) have been selected in today’s MLB Baseball draft.  Tomchick was selected in the 27th round (No. 812) by the St. Louis Cardinals and Ostrich in the 34th round (1029 pick) by the Kansas City Royals.  Earlier in the day junior third baseman and second Team All C-USA selection P.J. Higgins was picked in the 12th round by the Chicago Cubs.

The 6-3 Ostrich hit .295 for the Monarchs this year with four homers and 35 RBI.  He tallied a .435 slugging percentage and a .448 on base percentage. He also had 12 doubles, two triples and led the Monarchs with 47 walks this season which ranks second in C-USA. Ostrich had three hits in a game against Bryant, Virginia and Western Kentucky and ranked seventh in C-USA with 10 hit by pitched balls. At one point he reached base in 14 straight games. Ostrich graduated in May with a degree in sport management.

The 6-4 Tomchick compiled a 3-6 record with a 4.06 ERA. He made 13 starts and 17 appearances which included a one-hitter against Western Kentucky in ODU’s C-USA opener in Bowling Green, KY fanning a career high nine batters with only one walk.  Tomchick was named co-C-USA pitcher of the Week off that performance. He also fanned eight against Rutgers and picked up a save against Richmond. Tomchick graduated with a degree in business.
