NORFOLK, VA-- ODU junior guard Trey Freeman (Virginia Beach, VA.) has been named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VASID) All-State squad.

Trey Freeman led the Monarchs and ranked second in Conference USA in scoring at 17.0 points per game. He was named C-USA newcomer of the Year, first Team All-C-USA and selected to the league’s All-Academic squad.  A two-time C-USA Player of the Week selection, Freeman was named to the Paradise Jam All tournament squad in November.  He scored a career high 27 points against LA Tech and Western Kentucky, and netted 25 against LSU. Freeman became the first Monarch since Mark West in 1982 to perform a triple-double when he had 14 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists against Charleston Southern in an NIT opener. His game-winner against Murray state was ESPN’s Sportscenter play of the day. Freeman graduated in December with a degree in communications and is working towards a graduate degree in sports management. 

William & Mary senior Marcus Thornton has been named University Division Men’s Basketball State Player of the Year while Virginia Tech freshman Justin Bibbs was named Rookie of the Year by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID). Virginia coach Tony Bennett was named the State Coach of the Year.

The annual awards, which are selected by sports information and athletic communication professionals from around the Commonwealth, were announced Tuesday. The University Division covers all 14 Division I institutions in Virginia.

Thornton won Colonial Athletic Associate Player of the Year honors, the first William & Mary player to earn the distinction. A native of Upper Marlboro, Md., he was an Associated Press honorable mention All-American, becoming the sixth All-American in W&M history. He also was First Team All-CAA, First Team NABC All-District 10 and was one of 16 national finalists for the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award. Thornton will graduates as W&M’s all-time leading scorer (2,178 points) and as the school’s record holder for 3-pointers made with 325.

Bennett was named USBWA National Coach of the Year, ACC Coach of the Year, USBWA District 3 Coach of the Year and NABC UPS District 2 Coach of the Year after leading Virginia to its second straight ACC regular season title. Bennett, who is from Clintonville, Wisc., led his squad to a school-record tying 30 wins for second consecutive season and the Cavaliers were ranked in top 10 all season for first time since 1983.

Bibbs, a Dayton, Ohio, product was second on Hokies in scoring at 11.4 points per game, and second in assists at 1.8 per game. He had 18 games of double-figure scoring, including four games of 20-or-more points. The ACC Rookie of the Week for Dec. 28, Bibbs shot 41.3 percent from three-point range.

Senior Treveon Graham of VCU, Virginia junior Malcolm Brogdon,Richmond senior Kendall Anthony, Thornton joined Freeman on the All-State First Team.

Juniors Jeff Short and RaShid Gaston of Norfolk State, Virginia junior Justin Anderson, Radford senior Javonte Green and junior Terry Tarpey of William & Mary comprise the All-State Second Team.
