ODU Lacrosse Set to Battle Furman Saturday in Greenville, S.C.

NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion women’s lacrosse team looks to extend its winning streak to four games, as the Monarchs take on Furman Saturday afternoon in Greenville, S.C. Action is set to start at noon against the Paladins.

ODU enters the contest with a 10-4 overall record and a 3-1 mark in the Atlantic-Sun Conference. The Monarchs went down to Georgia last weekend and defeated Mercer and Kennesaw State to occupy second place in the conference standings. Old Dominion tied a program record that was set in 1980 with 24 goals in the 24-10 win over Mercer and held Kennesaw State scoreless for 34 minutes to claim the 19-4 win.

Jessica Liberty notched a team-high 10 goals over the two games, followed by Connor Carson and Ashmore Standing with five goals apiece. Carson also dominated the draw circle, combining for 12 draws in two games to go along with her six ground balls and two caused turnovers. For her efforts, she was named the Atlantic-Sun Player of the Week. Maggi Buckley started both contests and made nine saves during her time in goal.

Ashmore Standing leads the team with 49 points on 34 goals and 15 assists, while Liberty is a close second with 47 points with 39 goals and eight assists. Carson ranks third with 30 points (29g, 1a), but leads the team with 45 draws and 24 caused turnovers. Morgan Gallagher paces the defense with 22 caused turnovers and a team-leading 34 ground balls. Karen Hayde and Buckley have each seen time between the pipes for the Monarchs. Hayde has played 536 minutes and has recorded a 10.85 goals-against average, while Buckley has notched a 7.90 GAA in 303 minutes of action.

As a team, ODU ranks seventh in the nation in ground balls per game (20.00) and eighth in caused turnovers per game, averaging 10.14 per contest. The Monarchs also rank 29th in save percentage with a .463 mark, while ranking 21st in the country in scoring offense (13.00). Old Dominion also ranks in the top-50 in draw controls per game (11.57) and scoring defense (9.79).

Furman enters the contest with an 8-4 overall record and a 3-1 mark in conference play and is coming off a 16-5 loss to Jacksonville. Five different Paladins scored in the game, while Maggie Friel played all 60 minutes in goal and made seven saves. Britt Douglas leads Furman with 40 points on 33 goals and seven assists, while Meg Lingo ranks second with 31 points on 23 goals and eight assists. Paige Gamble ranks third on the team in points (29), but leads the Paladins with 38 draw controls on the season. Devon Horine has posted a complete stat line so far this season with 23 points (17g, 6a), 17 caused turnovers, 33 draw controls and 35 ground balls. Friel is the only Paladin to play in goal this year and has made 83 saves and recorded a 10.16 goals-against average.
