Old Dominion University and the men’s basketball program have enjoyed incredible national media coverage over the past few weeks following three exciting home games at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in the National Invitation Tournament, and a trip to the NIT semifinals in New York City.
We will all remember the last second heroics of Trey Freeman and his three-point shot to defeat Murray State on March 25. The shot propelled the Monarchs to the NIT semifinals at Madison Square Garden, the world’s most famous arena. The game vs. Stanford was featured on ESPN, while the band and spirit squads enjoyed national exposure on The Today Show that same day.
The Monarchs won 27 games this season, and stretched their home winning streak to 24 games. The energy level created by ODU fans throughout the season, and especially throughout March, played a huge role in the Monarchs’ success. From the opening tip till the final buzzer, the noise level in the “Ted” was deafening and played havoc with our opponents. ESPN announcers commented about the tremendous fan support and the role it played in pumping up the team. Over 2,000 fans and ODU students then piled on planes, buses, trains, and into cars to attend the NIT semifinal game in New York, and demonstrated “Monarch Mania” throughout the contest.
On behalf of President John Broderick, Head Coach Jeff Jones, his coaching staff and the men’s basketball team, I want to thank our Monarch fans everywhere for following and supporting the program this past season. Thank you Monarch Nation for making the “Ted” one of the best college atmospheres in the country. We are excited about the future of the program and look forward to our fans helping us keep the home-court winning streak alive in the 2015-16 season.
