BOCA RATON, FL—The 14th ranked Owls of Florida Atlantic (32-10/14-6) belted three homers to defeat Old Dominion (20-22/7-13) Saturday evening, 8-1. The contest, which started at 4 p.m. had two rain delays, one of 42 minutes and a second lasting 37 minutes.
ODU’s lone run came in the eighth inning as sophomore Connor Myers (Middletown, MD.) came home on freshman Zach Rutherford’s (Chesapeake, VA.) RBI groundout. With the score, 4-1 ODU had the tying run at the plate with senior Taylor Ostrich (Carroll, IA.) and Nick Walker (Virginia Beach, VA.) aboard, but reliever Bo Logan came on to get the final out of the inning. The Monarchs left 10 runners on base.
FAU scored single runs in the first three innings as well as the fifth inning, then exploded for four runs in the eighth.
Right fielder Brendon Sanger led with three hits, three RBI and two homers. He hit a solo shot in the sixth and a two-run homer in the eighth. First baseman Esteban Puerta hit a solo homer in the third inning. It was was fourth of the season while Sanger now has five.
Along with Sanger’s two-run homer in the eighth, Stephen Kerr doubled home two runs in that inning as well, to make it 8-1. IN all, FAU tallied 12 hits on the night.
The third game of the series is Sunday at 12 noon. The contest will be broadcast live on STAR1310 AM with ODU Director of Broadcasting Ted Alexander providing the play-by-play.
