NORFOLK, VA—The Marshall Thundering Herd (12-24/5-11) behind the pitching of righthander Chase Boster defeated ODU (17-20/5-11) 6-1 in the C-USA series opener before a crowd of 1,108 at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex on Bark in the Park Night.
ODU’s lone run came in the eighth inning when C-USA Player of the Week P.J. Higgins (Wallingford, CT.) led off with a double and scored on a two-out double by senior Josh Eldridge (Lorton, VA.).
Marshall scored all six runs with two outs in the fourth inning with the help of six hits and two ODU errors. Aaron Bossi knocked in two runs while Corey Bird, DJ Gee, and Matt Reed each knocked in a run for the Herd.
ODU freshman leftfielder Justin Hayes (Chesapeake, VA.) had two of the Monarchs seven hits on the night. Nick Walker (Virginia Beach, VA.), Zach Rutherford (Chesapeake, VA.), PJ Higgins, Josh Eldridge and Jason McMurray (Des Moines, IA.) each had one hit.
Marshall’s starting pitcher Chase Boster (4-0) pitched 8.1 innings, giving up six hits with five walks and five strikeouts. He held the Monarchs hitless until the fifth when McMurray led off with a single, followed by a single by Hayes, but ODU did not score.
Game two of the series is Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Bud Metheny Complex.
NOTE: ODU-W&M Game scheduled for Monday, April 20th at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton has been cancelled.
