WEST WINDSOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. – The Old Dominion Monarchs completed competition at the 2015 Knecht Cup in New Jersey on Mercer Lake this past weekend, sending five boats to the final rounds.
After day one on Saturday, all five of the boats competing placed high enough to advance to the semifinals of their respective divisions.
The Varsity 4 was the first boat to advance, as they finished in third place in their heat in a time of 7:47.00. The Monarchs finished ahead of Bucknell, UConn and Temple. The ODU “A” Second Varsity 4 followed with a third place finish in heat one of their event, finishing in a time of 8:04.57. The boat placed higher than North Carolina, Drexel and UConn. The ODU “B” Second Varsity 4 also placed third in their heat (8:05.73) ahead of Bucknell, Buffalo and Lehigh.
The Second Varsity 8 advanced to the semifinal round after placing fourth in their heat in a time of 6:57.15, ahead of Kansas and Marist. The Varsity 8 placed the highest out of all six ODU boats by taking second place in front of George Mason, UNC and Delaware in a time of 6:50.18, advancing to the semifinals.
On the final day, the Freshman 8 started competition for the Monarchs and advanced to the Petite Final in their division after placing fourth in heat two (7:40.91). The V4 continued to shine as they also advanced to the Grand Final after clocking in at 7:47.03 for second place.
The 2V8 came in fifth place in 7:11.91, placing them in the Third Level Final in the afternoon, while the V8 closed out its competition with a seventh place finish in the semifinals (7:01.48).
The V4 was the first boat to race in the finals, and picked up a hard fought fifth place in the Grand Final (7:49.76). The 2V4 “A” and “B” boats also raced for ODU, this time in the Petite Final. The “B” boat came in second place (8:00.68), while the “A” boat placed third in a time of 8:06.87.
In the Petite Final, the Freshman 8 placed fourth, ahead of George Mason, UMass and Villanova, clocking in at 7:32.55. The 2V8 closed out the day for ODU and had a good showing in the Third Level Final, placing fourth in a time of 7:19.88.
The Monarchs will be back in action on April 25-26, as they travel to Orlando, Fla. to take on Central Florida and Miami.
