ODU Lacrosse Earns Berth into 2015 Atlantic-Sun Tournament

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Old Dominion women’s lacrosse team clinched a spot in the 2015 Atlantic-Sun Tournament after posting a 17-5 win over Furman on Saturday afternoon.

The Monarchs improve to 11-4 overall and take over second place in the conference with a 4-1 mark. The Paladins fall to 8-5 overall and 3-2 in league play.

Furman got on the board first at the 27:12 mark off a free-position shot by Britt Douglass. ODU responded with a 6-0 run over the next 10 minutes, capped by a free-position goal from Megan Cameron. The run was led by Connor Carson, who chipping in two goals, and Christina Rea who added a goal and an assist.

The Monarchs held the Paladins to just two more goals the rest of the half, but closed with three more goals to take a 9-3 advantage at the half.

ODU continued to attack in the second half, opening the period with a 3-0 run with three-consecutive goals from Rea. Ashley Trice scored twice for Furman, but the Monarchs’ finished the game with five unanswered goals to claim the 17-5 victory.

ODU held a 30-25 lead in total shots and a 14-10 edge in draw controls. Furman held a slight 18-16 advantage in ground balls.

Maggi Buckley picked up the win in goal for the Monarchs, playing 51 minutes and making 10 saves, while Karen Hayde played the final nine minutes and stopped three shots. Maggie Friel suffered the loss, finishing with seven saves.

Rea led the Monarchs with five goals, while Ashmore Standing added three of her own. Jessica Liberty, Cameron and Carson each tallied two goals as well. Carson also added three assists, two ground balls and two draw controls to her stat line. Morgan Gallagher led the team with three ground ball pick-ups and three draw controls.

Trice paced the Paladins’ offense with three goals, while Douglass added one goal and one assist. Haley Gray led the defense with four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

The Monarchs will be back in action Saturday, April 18, as they host Detroit Mercy at 1:00 p.m. at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
