NORFOLK, VA-  ODU sophomore righthander Sam Sinnen (Virginia Beach, VA.) along with three relievers combined on a five-hit shutout to lead the Monarchs to a 4-0 victory over William and Mary Wednesday night ending ODU’s four-game losing streak.

The Monarchs broke the scoreless game in the fifth when junior thirdbaseman PJ Higgins (Wallingford, CT.) groundout plated junior shortstop Jason McMurray (Des Moines, IA.) who reached on a Tribe error.  ODU added a run in the sixth as Taylor Ostrich doubled, then came home on a Derick Francis sacrifice fly for a 2-0 Monarch lead.

In the eighth, McMurray singled and was aboard when sophomore rightfielder Nick Walker (Virginia Beach, VA.) belted his team best fourth homer to leftfield for a 4-0 ODU lead.

Sinnen pitched six innings, allowing just four hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Relievers Jake Josephs, Kyle Majette and Joey Benitez combined with Sinnen for the shutout, the Monarchs second of the season.   The Tribe threatened in the ninth with two runners on with one out, but Benitez came on to strikeout the next two batters for his first save of the year.

Taylor Ostrich (Carroll, IA.), Josh Eldrige (Lorton, VA.), and Nick Lustrino (Spring Lake, NJ.) each had two hits for ODU.  Ryan Hissey led the Tribe with two hits.

ODU hosts Charlotte in a three-game C-USA series beginning Friday evening at 6 p.m. at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.

NOTE: ODU’s starting battery consisted of sophomore twin brothers Sam Sinnen (pitching) and Kurt Sinnen catching.
