BERKELEY, Calif. – The Old Dominion lacrosse team picked up another win on the road after taking down UC Berkley by a 13-12 score. The Monarchs improved to 5-2 on the year, while the Bears fell to 1-3 on the season.
ODU struck first, just 4:30 into the game when Ashmore Standing scored off a free-position shot. Bella Huther gave Cal the 2-1 lead after scoring two goals in a row by the 17:50. The Monarchs then went on a 4-0 run to take a 5-2 lead with 11:27 left in the first half. Connor Carson led the attack with two goals during that span.
Old Dominion closed out the first half with two more goals to hold a 7-4 lead at the intermission.
The Bears climbed to within one goal, courtesy of Huther again. She scored two goals in the first five minutes to bring the lead 7-6 in favor of the Monarchs. Morgan Marralle tallied a goal at the 21:47 mark (8-6), but Cal scored two more goals to tie to game at 8-8 with 19:10 left to play.
The teams traded goals for the next five minutes, but Cal took the lead for the first time off a goal from Sasha Anielski with 10:15 left to play. ODU answered with a quick 3-0 run to take a 13-10 lead with 5:11 left to go. The Bears got a goal from Anielski in the final minutes, but could not overcome the three-goal deficit in time.
Karen Hayde took the win in goal for ODU, finishing the game with 10 saves. Helen Hansen suffered the loss and played 34:23 in goal and made four saves. Kate Gutierrez played the final 25:37 for the Bears and made two saves.
Standing led the Monarchs attack with four goals and one assist, while Carson and Jessica Liberty chipped in with two goals apiece. Morgan Gallagher added three caused turnovers and four ground balls to lead the defense.
Huther led the Bears with five goals, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers, while Anielski added two goals and two caused turnovers.
The Monarchs will be back in action on Tuesday, March 10 when they play UC Davis at 4:00 p.m.
