ODU Lacrosse Falls to Richmond, 15-8

RICHMOND, Va. – The Old Dominion women’s lacrosse team suffered their second loss of the season to in-state rival Richmond by a 15-8 margin on Wednesday night at Robins Stadium. The Monarchs fell to 4-2 on the year, while the Spiders improved their season record to 3-3.

Richmond started the game out strong, scoring three goals in the first 5:35 of the contest. Jessica Liberty put ODU on the board at the 20:24 mark to pull the Monarchs within two (3-1).

UR responded with another 3-0 run to increase its lead to 6-1 with 16:19 left to play, before Ashmore Standing scored her 17th goal of the year a minute later (6-2). The Spiders once again scored three more goals to take a 9-2 lead with a minute left in the half, but Connor Carson ended the first period on a good note for ODU with an unassisted tally (9-3).

Richmond’s Anna Jeszeck and Emily Doyle opened up the finial period strong, scoring the first three goals (12-3). Standing gave the Monarchs a little momentum with the 21:31 left to play (12-4), as she recorded her second goal of the contest.

The Spiders tacked on another goal (13-4) with a little over 16 minutes left, but Megan Cameron answered with her fourth goal of the season to make the score 13-5 with 12:01 on the clock.

Both teams would trade goals over the last 11 minutes as the game ended in favor of the Richmond Spiders.

ODU led UR in shots (28-27), but lost the draw control battle (13-12). The Spiders also held a 12-9 edge in ground balls.

Karen Hayde suffered the loss in goal for the Monarchs, playing the first half and finishing with nine saves. Maggi Buckley played the second half for the Monarchs and made one save. Emily Boyce took the win for Richmond, allowing only three goals and stopping nine shots in 45:59 of action. Michaela Aymong played the final 14 minutes for the Spiders and made one save.

Cameron, Carson and Standing led the ODU offense with two goals, while Liberty added a goal and dished out an assist. Carson also added five caused turnovers and two ground balls and Cameron chipped in two caused turnovers and a ground ball.

Doyle paced the Spiders offense with six goals on eight shots and two assists. Bailey Zerr added two goals and two assists, while Kim Egizi chipped in with two goals. Eight different players recorded a caused turnover, led by Egizi and Erin Geoghan with two.

The Monarchs will be back in action on March 8 and 10, as they travel to California to take on UC Berkley and UC Davis.
