NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion women’s soccer team dominated Longwood in the second of five spring games by a score of 4-0 this past Sunday afternoon at the ODU Soccer Complex.
“This was a great result against a strong and competitive Longwood side,” said ODU head coach Angie Hind. “Whilst we started a little sluggish, we certainly grew in strength as the game went on and managed to score some very good goals today. Most pleasing was the nature of the goals which reflected the team effort throughout the game.”
After a very competitive first half with few chances for both teams, it was the Lady Monarchs who took a 2-0 lead into the locker rooms at halftime. Melanie Oakes scored off a corner, in which she hit a glancing first time volley past the Longwood goalkeeper. Grace Haverly scored the second goal for ODU off a superb finish, as the ball was laid off to her just inside the box and she fired a high strike into the back of the net. Sam Frowen pulled off an excellent save by the near post from a great strike by Longwood to keep it 2-0 for the half.
ODU dominated the second half in long spells. A goal from Madison Hogan came via a corner when Oakes had hit a strike and Hogan was present to slot home the rebound. The fourth and final goal came from tremendous build up play and strike from Devin Dougherty which hit the post and Devin Hannis was there to knock in the goal for ODU. Old Dominion outshot Longwood, 11-4 on the day.
The ODU women’s soccer program also wanted to thank the many local youth players and families who came along to support the game. Close to 200 kids attended a festival put on by the soccer program prior to Sunday’s contest, where all the ODU players coached the kids. Many kids and their families stayed to watch the game, which was excellent as there was a crowd around 300 for the game.
Old Dominion will be back in action this weekend, when they travel to N.C. State for a Saturday, April 4th showdown at 3:00 p.m.
