NORFOLK, Va. – Former Old Dominion University quarterback Taylor Heinicke was named the Tom Fergusson Memorial Award as the Sportsman of the Year at the Norfolk Sports Club Jamboree Monday night held at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott.
The Tom Fergusson Memorial Award to the Sportsman of the Year was named after the Norfolk Sports Club’s second President, and first presented in 1943. The award was named for Mr. Fergusson due to his tremendous efforts in growing the Norfolk Sports Club, by obtaining outstanding sports figures from military bases as speakers.
Heinicke completed his four-year ODU career ranked sixth in Division I in career passing yards with 14,959 and sixth in touchdown passes with 132. He is one of just 20 Division I quarterbacks to have throw for more than 10,000 yards and rushed for more than 1,000.
In his final season, he completed 289-of-457 passes for 3,476 yards and 30 touchdowns while rushing for 139 yards and two touchdowns. He had five games of 300 or more passing yards including a season-best 471 at Western Kentucky. He passed for 430 yards and five touchdowns in ODU’s first Conference USA win in school history at Rice. Heinicke finished 17th in the country in passing yards and tied for 11th in touchdown passes.
Heinicke joins ODU Head Football Coach, Bobby Wilder (2009) and Athletics Director Dr. Wood Selig (2013), as recent Fergusson Award winners from Old Dominion.
