Old Dominion Monarchs Fall to Jacksonville, 14-4

NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion women’s lacrosse team fell Friday night to defending Atlantic-Sun champion Jacksonville, 14-4. The Monarchs are now 7-4 on the season and 0-1 in conference play, heading into Sundays A-Sun contest.

The Dolphins of Jacksonville maintained control of the game all night allowing a tied game for only a minute in the first half. Brittney Orashen scored the first marker for Jacksonville at 26:37 on an unassisted shot.

Connor Carson answered with her first goal of the night on a free position shot at 23:25. This would be the only time the game was tied as Jacksonville went on a 7-0 run to take a 8-1 lead with 8:51 left on the clock.

Junior attacker Ashmore Standing notched a tally at the 8:38 mark to end the Dolphins run for her 28th goal of the season. Carson recorded her second goal of the contest with 1:40 left on the clock, before Della Rocca scored with just two seconds left to give the Dolphins a 10-3 edge at the intermission.

Jacksonville opened the second half with a goal from Holly Ventimiglia, but Standing answered with her second goal of the night just 3:11 later. That would prove to be the last goal for the Monarchs as the game ended in favor of the Dolphins.

The Dolphins controlled the shot chart, as they held a 34-12 advantage over the Monarchs. Jacksonville also snagged five more draw controls (12-7) than Old Dominion, but both teams corralled 24 ground balls.

Karen Hayde suffered the loss in goal for ODU, playing 18:11 between the pipes. Maggi Buckley played the remaining 41:49 for ODU and finished the game with a season-high eight saves. Asia Moore picked up the win for the Dolphins and finished with five saves.

Carson and Standing each scored two goals for the Monarchs, with Standing adding three ground balls and a team-leading three draw controls. Jessica Liberty also added two caused turnovers and two ground balls, while Buckley led the team with five ground balls.

Della Rocca led all scorers with five goals, to increase her conference-leading total to 34. Ventimiglia and Aus added three goals apiece for the Dolphins, while Orashen chipped in with two.

The Monarchs will be back in action on Sunday when they host the Stetson Hatters for another Atlantic-Sun matchup at noon at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
