NORFOLK, VA. – The Old Dominion rowing team won four of the six races today against the University of North Carolina to win their only home event of the season.

UNC started off with a win in the first Novice 8+ race with a 6:49.98, finishing time edging out ODU (7:21.43) by several boat lengths.

ODU bounced back by winning the first Varsity 8+ race in the newly named John R. Broderick boat with a time of 6:29.07, beating UNC (6:35.66) by just over six seconds. The Monarchs also won the second Varsity 8+ race in the newly named Kate Broderick boat with a 6:35.72 finishing time. They also won by a six second margin over the Tar Heels of UNC (6:41.74).

In the first of two Varsity 4+ races, Old Dominion finished a full 15 seconds faster than UNC (7:38.73) with a time of 7:23.16. In the second V4+ race ODU had two boats racing against UNC and both finished just seconds before the Tar Heels. ODU ‘A’ finished in 7:42.89, ODU ‘B’ in 7:46.24 and the Tar Heels completed the course in 7:48.54.

UNC did win the second of two Novice 8+ races on the day. The Tar Heels finished in 7:09.69 while the Monarchs in 7:32.59.

Two course records were broken in the races, both in the newly christened Broderick boats.
