NORFOLK, Va. – In the Second Round of the WNIT, the Old Dominion University women’s basketball team (2112, 11-7) will play Villanova in Philadelphia on Sunday, March 22, at 2:00 p.m.
ALL-TIME SERIES
The Lady Monarchs have played Villanova one time in the program’s all-time history, which was in the NCAA Tournament. On March 3, 1989, ODU took down Villanova by a score of 66-41.
RADIO
The Sunday afternoon game will be aired live on ESPN 94.1 FM (Hampton Roads) with Doug Ripley and Susan Montgomery handling the duties. Their pregame show will begin at 1:30 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
Old Dominion is coming off a First Round 69-62 victory against the ACC’s Virginia on Thursday night. In that contest, Destinee Young recorded a career high of 20 points to go along with seven rebounds in 26 minutes of work in the winning effort.
Young led three other Lady Monarchs in doubles figures: Tiffany Minor (14 points and three assists), Jennie Simms (13 points, eight rebounds and six assists) and Chelisa Painter (12 points, nine rebounds and four assists).
ODU shot 44.3% for the contest, while limiting UVA to just two free-throws for the entire contest.
CONFERENCE USA
Conference USA women's basketball held a flawless 4-0 mark after opening-round postseason play on Thursday. Middle Tennessee and Southern Miss each picked up a win in the WNIT as well, while Marshall was victorious in its WBI game. Regular-season and tournament champion (RV) WKU will play (RV) Texas at 4 p.m. CT on Friday in Berkley, California, as part of the Albany Region of the 2015 NCAA Women's Basketball Championship.
Postseason WNIT Tournament Overview
The Women's National Invitation Tournament is an annual tournament involving 64 of the nation's top women's Division I basketball teams. All games, including the semifinals and championship, are hosted by participating schools. Every round is single elimination.
Format
The Postseason WNIT features 32 first-round games, followed by 16 second-round games, eight third-round games, four quarterfinal games, two semifinal games, and the championship. The championship game is televised live nationally. The event offers 32 automatic berths, one to each established conference, and 32 at-large berths. The WNIT field and bracket is announced late on the evening of the NCAA Tournament selections.
2015 Postseason WNIT
The 64-team tournament is a single-elimination event with all games played at sites of host schools. The WNIT is committed to offering deserved opportunities to women’s basketball programs, and the 2015 Postseason WNIT features a full 64-team bracket.
The WNIT offers teams an opportunity to get more practices in, to experience playoff-atmosphere games, to play in front of passionate fans, and to use their WNIT success as a springboard to the next season.
Last year, Rutgers and UTEP played in front of a sold-out arena at the 12,222-seat Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas. Rutgers scored a layup with 2 seconds left on the clock to edge UTEP 56-54 for the national championship title.
2015 WNIT Dates
The 64-team field was announced late Monday evening, March 16, 2015. The first round kicked off Wednesday, March 18, with the event culminating on Saturday, April 4 with the championship.
Round 1 – March 18-20.
Round 2 – March 21-24.
Round 3 – March 25-27.
Round 4 – March 28-30.
Semifinals – April 1-2.
Championship – Saturday, April 4, 3 p.m. ET.
