NORFOLK, Va. – Senior Kelsey Smither and freshmen Danielle Grega, Carrie Sensenig and Kelly Weaver have been named recipients of the Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I Scholars of Distinction awards, as released by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association recently.
The 79 student-athletes selected as Scholars of Distinction have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher through the first semester of the 2014-15 academic year.
The Old Dominion athletes were four of seven student-athletes selected from the Big East. The Monarchs had the second most athletes honored, as Virginia Commonwealth led the way with five players awarded. All four Monarchs are receiving this award for the first time over their careers.
“We are so proud of the four athletes on our team receiving the Scholars of Distinction award,” said Assistant Coach Amy Swensen. “Kelsey Smither has been a consistent performer on the field and in the classroom. She set a great high standard and great example for our team."
“We are also thrilled to have three freshmen do so well academically in their first semester of college," noted Swensen. "It speaks highly of the girls' character and effort and is a solid foundation for academic success throughout their undergraduate studies.”
ODU was also recognized with a Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award last week. The NFHCA will announce its National Academic Squad March 23.
