NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion Monarchs fell Sunday to in-state rival William & Mary 9-15. The Tribe started off strong with two first minute goals and never relinquished the lead. The Monarchs fell to 6-3 on the year, while the Tribe improved to 2-4.
William & Mary’s Abby Corkum scored the first marker of the game just 0:29 seconds into the game to put the Tribe up 1-0 early on. Ellen Shaffrey put in another quick goal on a free position shot 0:25 seconds after Corkum’s to give the Tribe a 2-0 lead just 0:54 seconds into the game.
Carson Connor was the first Lady Monarch to score points for Old Dominion. Her first came at the 28:18 on a free position shot and the second came at 21:55 on an unassisted shot to the net to tie the game.
The Tribe led 5-2 at the 16:50 mark in the first as ODU then went on the offensive attack scoring two goals to come within one at 5-4. Megan Cameron scored off of a Carson assist and Ashmore Standing put a marker on the board after an unassisted shot went in the goal.
In the final 13 minutes of the first half William & Mary would go on a six-to-two run that would put the Tribe up 11-6 going into halftime.
W&M would again start off strong, coming into the second half scoring the first four points to give them a 15-6 lead. The Lady Monarchs would close out the half on a 3-0 run resulting in a final score of 15-9.
William & Mary led 34-22 in shot and also held a 19-7 advantage in draw controls.
Karen Hayde and Maggi Buckley split time in goal combining for 11 saves on the day. Meredith Crizer picked up the win in goal for the Tribe, playing the first 18:41. Alex Lista play the rest of the game and made a game high eight saves.
The Monarchs will be back in action at the L.R. Hill Complex on March 21 when they face American at 1:00 p.m.
