NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion field hockey team recently earned 2014 Gladiator by SGI / NFHCA Division I National Academic Team recognition in an announcement made by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.

The National Academic Team Award recognizes those institutions that achieved a team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the first semester of the 2014-15 academic year.

Old Dominion was one of 71 qualified schools, finishing with a 3.26 cumulative team GPA. Seven Monarchs' players earned Dean’s List honors following the fall semester.

The academic success does not stop after undergrad, as two players will be attending graduate school next year. Kelsey Smither will begin her second year at ODU’s grad school, while Megan Hept will be in a grad program at Virginia Commonwealth University.

"Our staff is extremely proud of the girls for receiving the NFHCA academic award,” said Assistant Coach Amy Swensen. “Academic excellence is highly valued on our team. We are pleased that many of our players further their education at prestigious programs including ODU."

The 2014 Gladiator by SGI / NFHCA Scholars of Distinction will be released on Monday, March 16th, with the National Academic Squad being released on Monday, March 23rd.
