BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Old Dominion women’s lacrosse team suffered their first loss of the season, falling to Virginia Tech 17-4 in Blacksburg, Va. on Friday afternoon. The Monarchs fall to 3-1 overall, while the Hokies improve to 3-3 on the season.
Connor Carson scored the first goal just 1:13 into the contest to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead. Virginia Tech would then go on a 6-0 run over the next 18 minutes to take a 6-1 lead with 20:50 left in the first half.
ODU got a goal from Ashmore Standing to cut the lead to four (2-6), but the Hokies closed the half with a 4-0 run to hold a 10-2 edge at the intermission.
Standing scored the only two goals for the Monarchs in the second half, but the deficit was too much for the Monarchs as they fell 17-4.
ODU held an edge in shots (35-20) and ground balls (9-7), while Virginia Tech recorded a 19-4 edge in draw controls.
Standing led the offense with three goals for the Monarchs, while Carson added the last tally. Carson also added four ground balls, one draw control and one ground ball. Missy Koscinski paced the defense with two ground balls and one caused turnover.
Karen Hayde suffered her first loss in goal for the Monarchs. She played the first 18 minutes in goal for the Monarchs and made three saves. Maggi Buckley played the remaining 41:11 in goal and make five saves.
Megan Graham earned the win for the Hokies, playing the entire game and making 10 saves.
The Monarchs will be back in action on Sunday, when they host Davidson on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the LR Hill Sports Complex.
