NORFOLK, Va. – The No. 68-ranked Old Dominion men’s tennis kept its perfect record alive as they defeated Yale 6-1 Sunday at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. No. 66 ranked Carlos Lopez Villa won in straight sets, keeping the Madrid, Spain a perfect 7-0 on the season.
“It’s great to get out and compete,” said head coach Aljosa Piric. “The last two of our matches were postponed or canceled due to inclement weather, so our guys were excited and eager to get back to battle.”
The day started off with a slight hitch as campus lost power in the middle of doubles play, however the Monarchs (7-0, 2-0 C-USA) were able to win 2-of-3 matches for the first team point. Adam Moundir and Michael Weindl, playing at No. 1, earned a 6-2 decision over Yale’s Martin Svenning and Tyler Lu. In the No. 3 match, Zvonimir Podvinski and Javier Jover Maestre downed Alex Hagermoser and Photos Photiades by a score of 6-2.
Weindl kicked things off in singles action with a 6-1, 6-2 No. 3 victory over Daniel Faierman. Following Weindl was Lopez Villa, playing in the No. 1 spot. The right-handed senior, ranked No. 66 nationally, defeated Lu 6-0, 6-1 to improve to 7-0.
At No. 5, Jover Maestre finished next with a 6-4, 6-3 win against Fedor Andrienko. The No. 6 match went to Podvinski, as the junior from Zagreb, Croatia downed Photiades 7-5, 6-1.
Moundir earned the final point for Old Dominion with a close No. 2 match against Svenning. The freshman from Luzern, Switzerland dropped his first set 2-6 but battled back to the next two 7-6(4) and 6-3.
“Our match today got suspended due to power outage, but our guys made the most of it and certainly did not let it affect them clinching the doubles point with wins at 1 and 3,” added Piric.
Piric continued, “I was happy with the way Michael and Carlos played, they gave us quick points at 1 and 3. Javi and Zvonimir followed up with solid wins for us as well. Adam was able to battle through a tough opponent and was able to bounce back after dropping the first set to win a tough three-setter. Adam finding a way to win a tough match today is great for our team. We will continue to build as a team and continue to improve.”
