NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion women’s tennis team pulled out a close 4-3 victory over the University of Pennsylvania Sunday at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
The loss was first of the season for the Quakers (3-1), which started off the day by claiming the doubles team point with a pair of victories. The final doubles match went unfinished.
“Today represented team tennis at its finest,” said head coach Dominic Manilla. “The grit and determination that our team showed at every spot in the line-up was nothing but impressive.”
The Lady Monarchs (4-3) responded quickly as No. 116 Borislava Botusharova, playing in the top spot, defeated Penn’s Agustina Sol Eskenazi 6-2, 6-3.
Old Dominion grabbed its second point of the day when Ingrid Vojcinakova earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Kana Daniel in No. 3 action.
Next to finish was Marijana Novakovic, who went to three sets with Lina Qostal. The sophomore from Bosnia & Herzegovina claimed the No. 4 singles match by a score of 7-6(8), 6-7(5), 6-0.
Ivana Vukovic captured the decisive point for the Lady Monarchs. Playing against Ria Vaidya at No. 5, the pair battled for three sets before Vukovic sealed the win 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(5).
“After a slow start to the doubles we put the pressure on them and they responded,” added Manilla. “It is great going into the week off with this win under our belts.”
