DENTON, Texas – Old Dominion University’s men’s tennis player No. 43 ranked Carlos Lopez Villa bagged a pair of singles victories, including a win over a nationally-ranked opponent, to earn the C-USA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week honor.
No. 43 ranked Lopez Villa knocked off the top ranked player in the conference, UTSA’s No. 42 ranked Tomas Stillman, over the weekend in straights sets (6-4, 7-6). Lopez Villa remains unbeaten for the spring season with a 3-0 record. Lopez Villa was instrumental in the Monarchs knocking off nationally ranked No. 75 Rice on Sunday after taking down his opponent Srikar Alla in a tight three setter on Court No. 1. Lopez Villa now has his team off to a 3-0 start. Over the past three seasons, the right-hander from Madrid, Spain is a combined 41-2 in singles action.
This is the first time this season Lopez Villa has been named C-USA Athlete of the Week and third of his career (Jan. 22 and Feb. 12, 2013).
Lopez Villa and the rest of the Tennis Monarchs welcome Elon and Richmond to the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center Feb. 7-8.
