NORFOLK, Va. – 18th-ranked Old Dominion wrestling defeated MAC rival, Buffalo, 33-12, Friday night at the Ted Constant Center. The Monarchs are now 8-3 in dual action this season and will return to the mat on Sunday, Jan. 25 when they take on Kent State at 1:00 p.m.
Buffalo took the lead early on when Sean Peacock recorded a pin over Michael Hayes, earning six points for the Bulls.
No. 9 Chris Mecate grinded out his match and picked up a 5-4 decision over Colt Cotton of Buffalo. Mecate’s win cut the Bull’s win to just three points (3-6). He is now 13-7 on the season and 5-4 in duel action.
No. 12 Alexander Richardson won the 149 lb match with a fall (6:16) over Buffalo’s Justin Cooksey. The pin over Cooksey gave Monarchs the lead (9-6) that they would never relinquish. Richardson is now 17-6 on the season going into Sunday’s match against the Golden Flashes.
True freshman TC Warner picked up his fourth duel win, shutting out his opponent with a 10-0 major decision, earning four team points for the Monarchs (13-6). He leads the team with a 25-12 overall record.
No. 15 Tristan Warner won with a 12-3 major decision over Rrok Ndokaj. He earned four more dual points, bringing his team-leading total to 43. Warner is undefeated in duals at the 165-weight class with a record of 10-0 and his season record at 20-2. At halftime ODU lead 17-6.
ODU came out strong following halftime with Austin Coburn claiming a 6-2 decision over Wally Maziarz. The Monarchs lead the Bulls 20-6 going into the 184-pound bout.
No. 2 Jack Dechow took the 184-weight class with a 10-1 major decision (24-6) over Austin Weigel. Tonight’s win was Dechow’s third major decision of the year and he now sits at 10-1 in dual action.
No. 22 Kevin Beazley won with a fall (2:01) over James Benjamin at the 197-weight class. He was the only other wrestler to claim six team points as he gave ODU the 30-6 lead. Beazley is now 21-10 on the season.
No. 29 Jake Henderson took his match over Mike Silvis by a 3-2 decision as ODU lead Buffalo 33-6 with just one bout left. Freshman Josh Markham fell to Buffalo’s Max Soria (2:51) to reach the final score of 33-12.
Old Dominion returns to action on Sunday for high school appreciation day, when it hosts Kent State for a 1:00 p.m. match.
