DENTON, Texas – In the second ever meeting between Old Dominion and North Texas, it was the Lady Monarchs (10-6, 3-2) who took down the Mean Green (2-14, 1-4) at the Super Pit on Saturday night.
Jennie Simms led all scorers, netting 22 points to go along with four rebounds. Also in double figures for ODU were: Tiffany Minor (11 points and six rebounds) and Destinee Young (10 points and nine rebounds).
The score was tied 4-4 at the first media timeout of the ballgame, which occurred at the 15:45 mark. Old Dominion led North Texas 9-7 at the under-12 media timeout, as the Lady Monarchs scored 8 points in the paint and held a 12-5 rebound edge over the Mean Green. The game was again tied at the under-eight media timeout at 9 apiece.
Destinee Young scored eight of the Lady Monarchs first 13 points, as Old Dominion led North Texas, 18-15, at the final media timeout of the opening half with 3:03 showing on the game-clock.
In a first half, which experienced seven ties and two lead changes, it was the Lady Monarchs who took a 22-21 advantage into the locker rooms behind eight points from Young. Jennie Simms finished the half with six points and two assists. Briesha Wynn led the way for NT and led all scorers with nine points, to go along with four rebounds.
For the half, Old Dominion shot 30.3% (10-33) from the floor, 9.1% from three (1-11) and 50% (1-2) from the free-throw line. North Texas connected on 40.9% (9-22) from the floor, 16.7% (1-6) from deep and 50% (2-4) from the FT line.
Old Dominion started the second half on a 6-0 run to take a 31-23 lead by the first media timeout of the second half with 15:52 to play. North Texas chipped away at its deficit, but Lady Monarchs still led by a score of 31-27 with 11:58 remaining in regulation.
With 6:39 to play, Old Dominion led the Mean Green by a score of 36-34. At the final media timeout, the Lady Monarchs led NT 42-37 with 3:51 remaining in regulation, before claiming a 54-44 victory.
The Lady Monarchs forced a total of 21 turnovers in the win. For the ballgame, Old Dominion connected on 32.7% (17-52) from the floor, 17.6% (3-17) from deep and 73.9% (17-23) from the charity stripe.
Briesha Wynn led the way for North Texas in a 22-point and four rebound effort. Terra Ellison (nine points and four rebounds) and BreAnna Dawkins (nine points) followed. For the contest, NT shot 35.3% (18-51) from the floor, 21.4% (3-14) from three and 55.6% (5-9) from three point range.

Old Dominion will return to the Ted Constant Center for a Thursday, Jan. 22 contest against Middle Tennessee at 7:00 p.m. The Lady Monarchs will remain at home for a Saturday, Jan. 24, showdown versus UAB at 2:00 p.m.
