NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion University’sSidney Rivera (Hampton, NJ.), Jesse Miralrio (Arlington, TX.), Ryan Condotta (Keller, TX.) and David Macsicza (Dunajska, Slovakia) have been named to the Virginia sports Information Directors (VaSID) 2014 All-State Soccer squad as released today. Rivera, Miralrio and Condotta were named to the first team and Macsicza was selected to the second team All-State squad.
After leading the University of Virginia to the College Cup national title, the Cavaliers’ Eric Bird and George Mason All-America selection, Timi Mulgrew, have earned Co-Player of the Year honors in the state of Virginia. UVA head coach George Gelnovatch and Radford redshirt freshman goalkeeper, Aitor Pouseu Blanco, earned Coach of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors, respectively.
Rivera, Conference USA Tournament’s Offensive MVP led the Monarchs in scoring with nine goals which rank him 38th nationally and third in C-USA. Rivera scored eight of his goals in the last six matches of the season, including four in the C-USA Tournament. He will compete in the MLS Combine in January.
Miralrio finished third on the team in points with three goals and four assists. He was named Third team All-C-USA and third team NSCAA All-Southeast Region. The sophomore was also selected to the C-USA All-Tournament squad.
Ryan Condotta finished second on the Monarchs squad in scoring with 11 points on five goals and one assist. He was named third team All-C-USA and C-USA All-Tournament as well as C-USA All-Academic.
Junior defender David Macsicza helped anchor the Monarchs defense and was named C-USA Tournament Defensive MVP. He also scored two goals and assisted on two during the season.
2014 Conference USA Champion Soccer Monarchs (13-7-1) ranked 24th in the final NSCAA/Continental Tire Coaches Poll. ODU advanced to the NCAA tournament for the fifth straight year and 11th of the last 13 under head coach Alan Dawson, the nation's 13th winningest active coach. ODU defeated Saint Francis - Brooklyn, 3-0 in the first round before losing a heartbreaker to eighth seeded Georgetown, 2-1 with less than 10 seconds left in the second overtime period. In all, the Monarchs played ten teams (winning five) who were ranked at one time in the coaches poll during the season.
