NORFOLK, Va. – The 18th-ranked ODU wrestling team competed at the Cleveland State open and saw Chris Mecate and Austin Coburn place second in their weight class.
"The CSU open gave our guys a chance to gain victories and valuable mat time," said head coach Steve Martin. "This event gave us the opportunity to gain valuable wins to increase our profile when qualifying each individual weight class for the NCAA tournament. We are looking forward to competing against another top-20 team next week at home when we dual UTC on Saturday at 1 pm. We encourage everyone to come out and pack the TED!"
Mecate started out the day with a win by fall over Jayce Carr from Cleveland State in 2:37, his fastest fall of the season. He then picked up a 6-0 decision over Ben Griffin of Eastern Michigan, before defeating Ryan Hull from Gardner Webb by a 17-0 tech fall in the quarterfinal round. In the semifinal bout, Mecate took down Maurice Miller from Notre Dame in double overtime, 5-4, to advance to the first-place match. Luke Stewart of Campbell took first place over Mecate, winning by forfeit.
Coburn, wrestling unattached for the Monarchs, picked up a 4-0 decision over Wesley Maskill from Michigan State and followed with an 11-1 major decision over conference foe Dakota Sizemore from Ohio University. In the quarterfinal bout, Coburn won by decision over Dominic Rigous from Clarion by a 5-2 decision. Coburn took the semifinal bout over Jacob Davis from Eastern Michigan by a 3-1 decision to advance to the first-place match. In the first-place match, Coburn fell to Johnny Sebastian from Northwestern by a 15-3 major decision.
Warner started the open strong, picking up a 10-0 major decision over Anthony DeCarlo from No. 3 Ohio State. In round two, Warner defeated David Church of Gannon by a 6-2 decision. Warner continued to wrestle hard, as he defeated Nathan Wynkoop of Cleveland State by tech fall (15-0) and Josh Ortman of Bloomsburg by fall (2:05) to advance to the semifinal round. Warner forfeited the semifinal bout.
Geoghegan dropped his first match to Jake Danishek from Indiana by a 17-6 major decision, but bounced back Kyle Simaz by 10-0 major decision. In the consolation round four, Geoghegan took down Blake Miller of Notre Dame by a 6-2 decision and Wynkoop by a 7-4 decision in round five. He continued to take down Rocco Borg from Eastern Michigan by a 5-1 decision to advance to round seven. John Boyle from American defeated Geoghegan by forfeit.
Eads ton by fall over Joseph Evans from Gardner Webb by fall (4:54) in his first bout of the day, and made it to the quarterfinal match before falling to Micah Jordan from No. 3 Ohio State by a 9-5 decision. In the consolation round six, Eads took down Kyle Ash from Gardner Webb by fall (0:33), but forfeited his final match of the day.
Nathan Coburn, John D’Agostino, Michael Hayes (unattached), Zach Kelleher (unattached), Buddy Scarborough (unattached), Jared Swan (unattached) and Zach Wilson also competed for ODU.
ODU is back in action Dec. 20 when they hose No. 24 Chattanooga for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
