Men’s Tennis wins 6-of-8 singles matches, 4-of-6 doubles on first day of Tribe Invitational
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Old Dominion men’s tennis opened play at the William & Mary Tribe Invitational Friday at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center by winning six-of-eight singles matches against the host Tribe and winning four-of-six doubles matches.
Carlos Lopez-Villa, ranked #42 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Preseason Poll, defeated Christian Cargill 6-4, 6-0.
Adam Moundir earned a close 7-6(5), 6-4 victory over Lars de Boer.
Michael Weindl won in three sets over Will Juggins 6-7(7), 6-3, 6-3.
Javier Jover Maestre bested Damon Niquet 6-4, 7-6 (11).
Darragh Glavin also won in three sets. The junior battled with Alec Miller, taking the match 7-6 (4), 6-7 (3), 10-4.
David Botti added his name to the win column with a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Luqman Ebrahim.
Theophile Lanthiez fell to Addison Appleby 2-6, 6-2, 7-5, while Zvonimir Podvinski lost his match 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (2) to Scott Huang.
In doubles action, the Monarchs played three sets against William & Mary and another three against Harvard. Moundir and Weindl earned an 8-5 win against Appleby and Cargill (W&M), while Lopez Villa and teammate Lanthiez took down William & Mary’s Huang and Juggins 8-6. The Tribe won the final match as de Boer and Miller defeated Jover Maestre and Podvinski 8-6.
Harvard seized the first doubles match as Sebastian Beltrame and Grant Solomon edged out Moundir and Weindl to an 8-7 final. Old Dominion succeeded in the other two draws, however, as Lopez Villa and Lanthiez fought Andrew Ball and Shaun Chaudhuri to an 8-7 victory and Jover Maestre and Podvinski defeated Conor Huaghey and Jean Thirouin 8-4.
The Monarchs return to action Saturday at 9 a.m. in singles competition with Harvard.
