NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University women’s basketball team took down Davis & Elkins, 91-62 in the Lady Monarchs one and only exhibition, behind 20 points from redshirt senior Chelisa Painter.

Davis & Elkins jumped out to a 10-4 lead at the under-16 media timeout, before the Lady Monarchs answered back with a 12-0 run capped off by an Annika Holopainen layup at the 12:28 mark.

With 7:15 remaining in the first half, Old Dominion led by 13 (29-16), with 23 of the points coming from inside D&E’s paint. By the under-8 timeout, ODU extended its advantage to 40-23 with 3:47 to play in the first half.

The Lady Monarchs led 48-28 at halftime, with Chelisa Painter pacing the team with 10 points. Jennie Simms followed with seven points, four assists and four defensive rebounds. Holopainen, LaQuanda Younger and Ashley Jackson each contributed six points.

Old Dominion shot 16-34 (47.1%) from the field in the opening half and was 13-16 (81.3%) from the free-throw line. The team also collected 23 boards, compared to the Senators’ 16.. The Lady Monarchs led in points in the paint (27-8), points off turnovers (15-8), second-chance points (16-4), and fast breaks (9-0). Old Dominion’s bench outscored Davis & Elkins’ 21-3.

Ashley Bowles paced the Senators with 10 points. Davis & Elkins shot 9-27 (33.3%) from the field and made 6-9 (66.7%) of its free throws.

After a back and forth first eight minutes of the second half, the Lady Monarchs led Davis & Elkins 61-40 with 11:38 remaining in the ballgame. With 6:54 showing on the game-clock, the Senators’ Ashley Bowles drilled a three, cutting their deficit to 67-49. Old Dominion pushed its lead back to 21 at the final media timeout (3:59), which was highlighted by a Tiffany Minor blocked shot, followed by a Minor three-pointer.

Simms finished with 16 points for Old Dominion and Odegua Oigbokie reached double digits with 10 points of her own. Younger was 3-for-5 from beyond the arc for nine points.

Davis & Elkins also had three players reach double figures. Stephanie Wooten and Bowles each netted 15 points, while Sharmaine Baker added 11 points. Bowles made 3-of-5 three-point attempts while Baker led the Senators in rebounds with five boards.

Old Dominion shot 28-62 (45.2 %) from the field, 6-16 (37.5&) from three-point range and 29-36 (80.6%) from the charity stripe. The Lady Monarchs completed the evening leading in points off turnovers (21-14), rebounds (48-30), second-chance points (23-6), points in the paint (43-26), fast-break points (13-2), blocks (6-0) and steals (10-7). The bench outscored the Senators’ 30-12.

Davis & Elkins shot 22-54 (40.7) from the field and made 11-23 (47.8%) of its free throws.
