NORFOLK, Va. – The 17th-ranked Old Dominion Monarchs went 2-1 at the Journeymen/ASICS Northeast Duals on Saturday, taking down LIU Post and No. 22 Purdue, but falling to Wyoming. The Wrestling Monarchs are now 2-2 on the season.
“We had a great day of competition,” said Head Coach Steve Martin. “Tristan Warner was very impressive and Jack Dechow wrestled hard throughout the day. They both put a lot of points on the board. We still have to focus on widening our gap between our opponents so outside influences cannot dictate match outcomes. Our loss to Wyoming was a very winnable match. Several caution points were given up to the opposing team and that dictated the outcome of the match. The Purdue match came down to heavyweight and Jake Henderson closed the match for us. Tristan Warner’s bonus points were big here as well. We are very early in the season and will focus on competing hard for seven minutes before we take on a tough Chattanooga team at home on three weeks.”
Old Dominion started out the day sweeping LIU Post with a 48-0 victory. The win marked the 30th shutout in program history and the first since the Monarchs defeated Deleware State 48-0 during the 2007-08 season. ODU recorded five wins by fall, three by major decision and two by decision. Kevin Johnson, Devin Geoghegan, Austin Coburn, Jack Dechow and Matt Tourdot led ODU by recording a fall over their respective opponents. Johnson took down Matt Langan in 1:50, while Geoghegan followed with a fall over Jackson Mordente in 2:44. Coburn won by fall over James Sinclair (1:54), Dechow defeated Ronnie King (5:11) and Tourdot took down James Louison in 2:38.
In the Monarchs second bout of the day, ODU suffered a 24-10 loss to Wyoming, marking the third-consecutive loss to the Pokes. Alexander Richardson (Jersey City, N.J.), Tristan Warner (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) and Jack Dechow (Richmond, Ill.) each collected a win for the Monarchs. Richardson recorded a 2-1 decision over Jake Elliot, while Dechow took down returning NCAA qualifier, No. 16 Benjamin Stroh by a 7-4 decision. Warner picked up another big win, this time it was a 13-2 major decision over NCAA qualifier, No. 19 Dakota Friesth.
In just the second neutral site meeting between the two teams, the Wrestling Monarchs picked up a narrow 16-15 win over Big Ten standout, Purdue. Dechow, Jacob Henderson, Brandon Jeske, Chris Mecate and Warner each posted wins over their respective opponents. Jeske defeated Luke Welch via a 7-5 decision, while Mecate took down Nick Lawrence with a 4-2 decision. Warner picked up his second-consecutive major decision, defeating Patrick Robinson 17-3. He is now 8-0 on the season. Dechow gave the Monarchs a 13-12 lead with just two matches left after he defeated Patrick Kissel by a 9-3 decision. With the Boilermakers leading 15-13 with one match left, Henderson secured the win by taking down Tyler Kral via a 2-0 decision.
The Monarchs will be back in action on Sunday, December 14th when they travel to Cleveland, Ohio for the Cleveland State Open. The open will feature four nationally ranked teams, including No. 22 Kent State, No. 10 Michigan, No. 3 Ohio State and No. 17 Old Dominion.
