NORFOLK, Va. -- The 14th-ranked Wrestling Monarchs dropped a 24-10 match to the No. 7 Missouri Tigers on Sunday afternoon at the Ted Constant Center. The attendance for the match reached over 1,100 people.
Monarchs’ senior, Tristan Warner, was the only wrestler to pick up a win, as he defeated Cody Johnston by a 15-5 major decision. Warner controlled the match from the start, claiming two takedowns in the first period. In the second round, Warner increased his score to 7-3 after a reversal. In the final period, Warner put the nail in the coffin with a takedown and two nearfalls to claim the 15-5 major decision and four points for ODU.
Kevin Beazley (197), Jack Dechow (184), Chris Mecate (141) and Alexander Richardson (149) all recorded close matches against their opponents.
Mecate had control for most of the match before No. 9 Lavion Mayes recorded a takedown and a nearfall to record the 5-4 decision.
Beazley went toe-to-toe with the defending national champion J’Den Cox at 197 pounds. After Beazley recorded an escape to make the score 2-1, Cox racked up over two minutes of riding time and an escape of his own in the final period to claim the 4-1 decision.
Dechow took on Willie Miklus and took control of the match early, taking a 5-3 lead after two periods. In the final round, Miklus recorded a takedown and two escapes to knot the score at 7-7 and send the match into sudden victory overtime. Dechow had a takedown opportunity at the start, but could not capitalize, as Miklus notched a takedown and the 9-7 win.
Richardson battled returning All-American, No. 3 Drake Houdashelt, to a narrow 3-2 decision. Richardson started the match out strong with a takedown, but recorded two penalties as Houdashelt recorded the 3-2 win.
Freshman TC Warner went up against No. 9 Joey Lavalle, but lost by a 7-2 decision and Austin Coburn took on No. 14 Mike England (L, 3-1 decision). Brandon Jeske competed against retuning All-American, No. 3 Alan Waters, but fell via 5-2 decision, while Michael Hayes dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 13 Matt Manley.
Old Dominion recorded seven takedowns, eight escapes and two reversals over the match.
The Wrestling Monarchs will be back in action this weekend as the team travels to Albany, N.Y. to face LIU post, Wyoming and Purdue at the Northeast Duals.
